Each year the Inland Revenue raise "enquiries" into about one in twenty tax returns - some are randomly selected but some are selected because of "information received" or because figures submitted over previous years have looked unusual.

These enquiries can take two forms - an aspect enquiry is normally a simple request to confirm one or two of the entries on your tax return whereas a full enquiry will be a thorough investigation into all of your business and personal affairs for a period.
